Chile on Thursday reported that 154,092 people have tested positive for COVID-19 since the disease's outbreak in the country 100 days ago.

The death toll of COVID-19 has climbed to 2,648.

In the 24 hours ending 9 p.m. Wednesday, health authorities detected 5,596 new cases and registered 173 more deaths from COVID-19.

Of the new cases, 5,089 presented symptoms and 507 were asymptomatic, while a total of 25,000 cases are still active, meaning they are being treated or quarantined.

According to Chile's Health Ministry, some 19,976 COVID-19 tests were carried out in the 24-hour period, bringing the total number of tests done to 781,043.

June "will likely be the toughest month in the battle against this disease, especially due to its impact on the center of the country, where most of the population live," Health Minister Jaime Manalich said at a press conference.

This week, other parts of the country joined the capital Santiago and its metropolitan area in lockdown, including Valparaiso, Vina del Mar and San Antonio.

Lockdown measures are to be reviewed on June 16 to determine whether they can be relaxed.
