MANILA, April 10 (APD) – Huawei Philippines Vice President and COO Daniel Guo Zhi downplayed concerns about security as claimed by some parties including the United States of America.
In an interview at a send-off dinner for six Filipino students leaving for Huawei ICT Competition in Malaysia late Tuesday, Mr. Guo said Huawei is a hardware provider.
“In the Philippines, we provide equipment for Globe, for Smart and for Philippine Long Distance Telephone (PLDT) Co. and they are the ones running their networks in the country,” he said. He added Filipinos should not worry about security.
He downplayed statements made by United States Secretary of State Michael Pompeo who recently visited Manila that the Philippine government should have second thoughts about utilizing Huawei’s 5G services because of security concerns.
Guo added in the past 30 years, since 1987, there is no record that Huawei has been involved in security issues. He explained the United States simply wants to control or stifle growth in technology.
He explained his company allocates at least 15% of their annual revenue to research and development as they have research centers in Germany, Russia, France, Indonesia and Sweden to name a few.
Asked how Huawei is doing in the Philippines Mr. Guo said they now have ten offices around the country backed up by their regional team to support their growing operations.
“We work closely with (telecom) operators in the Philippines for Filipinos to enjoy low cost network,” he explained as he underscored the need for close business relations with Philippine-based companies.
“We will make sure we’re delivering the best equipment and best services for our clients,” he concluded.
