China's Xiong Jingnan retains strawweight title in One Championship
In a women's strawweight bout, Singapore's Angela Lee attempted to make history by becoming the first female double-champion in promotional history at only 22 years old, but only saw the champion from China, Xiong Jingnan hand her first professional loss in MMA, during the ONE championship's inaugural event “A New Era” held in Tokyo on Sunday.
Xiong tried to survive an armbar from Lee and was able to endure the pain and made it to the bell, with the time ticking down in the fourth round.
A minute and a half into the fifth and final round, the Chinese, known as “the Panda,” hammered Lee with a vicious straight right to the body, following with a barrage of punches to the head and a couple body kicks that had Lee covering up.
A few more head shots and the referee stepped in to save the Singaporean from further punishment.
The 31-year-old Xiong, who was last seen knocking out Samara Santos Cunha at ONE: Beyond the Horizon last September in Shanghai, had won her previous eight fights, with five of them coming by way of TKO, and once again successfully retained her title by TKO in a strawweight war in Tokyo.
