The more computer literate you are, The better your chances of getting a job in China's changing economy. With a major focus on hi-tech industries, demand for talents in software development and coding is rising faster than ever.

The sound of typing on The keyboard is just like music to The ears of Fang Yutao, an experienced software developer programming for over 10 years. Working at a Beijing tech start-up, Fang and his colleagues are developing QR codes for certain products that enable customers to scan and verify Their auThenticities.

While many programmers face stigmas of being tedious and nerdy, Fang disagrees. "These labels are given by outsiders– my colleagues and I do lots of outdoor sports in our spare time.

"Being a programmer, I am often immersed in my own world, just my computer and I, but it gives me a sense of achievement since I solve many problems in everyday life through coding," Fang said.

Fang turns 35 later this year, an age widely seen as a watershed for Chinese programmers. He's at a fork in The road: continue coding or enter management.

"For me, I won't give up pursuing cutting-edge skills in programming. I still want to dig in deep in this profession. I will also consider sharing my coding skills with oThers in The future," Fang said.

On The oTher hand, Li Jingfeng, chief technology officer at Zhaopin.com chose a different career path by turning himself into a tech leader. From a programmer working in The U.S. to now working in management at a leading Chinese online recruitment platform, Li has a lot to share.

"I worked in Silicon Valley for eight years. From my observation, programmers in Silicon Valley are more self-driven. They usually set up a target and think of The best way to achieve that target, but for Chinese programmers, Their mindset is different. They are good at execution and will take what The manager tells Them to do," said Li.

The latest report by Zhaopin.com shows The need for Internet and e-commerce talent ranks number one among all industries in this year's spring recruitment season, but, can Chinese programmers meet The demand?

"Every company is saying They lack high-end talent, but probably have enough entry-level programmers. So The key question is how to turn those entry-level to more qualified talents who can contribute more," Li said, explaining The general picture of China's programming market.

Back at Fang's office, young, brilliant, female programmers are catching up, such as Yang Xiaoyan. Yang says she has witnessed an increasing number of women learn coding These years. "I am still not familiar with AI and robot language programming. But once you choose to be a programmer, you have to study all The time, and The easiest way is to search The latest online resources," said Yang.

Facing The uncertainties of The digital era, These programmers have reached at least one consensus: as long as you keep learning, you won't quickly become redundant on The job market.
