2 killed, 8 injured as mortar mine strikes residential area in E. Afghanistan

MEHTERLAM, AFGHANISTAN, March 28 (Xinhua) -- Two civilians were confirmed dead and eight others injured as a mortar mine fired by militants struck a house in Alishing district of the eastern Laghman province on Thursday, provincial government spokesman Assadullah Dawlatzai said.

"A mortar mine fired by the armed oppositions struck a house in Alishing district this afternoon, killing two innocent civilians on the spot and injuring eight others, all civilians," Dawlatzai told Xinhua.

Taliban militants who are active in the area have yet to make comment.
