Chinese envoy appeals for proper solution for Syrian refugees
UNITED NATIONS, March 27 (Xinhua) -- A CHINESE envoy on Wednesday called on the international community to actively support the reconstruction in Syria, and to create conditions for the return of refugees and internally displaced people (IDPs).
A fundamental improvement of the humanitarian situation in Syria requires the international community to support the Syrian government and people in their economic and social reconstruction, so as to create conditions for the return of refugees and IDPs and help Syrian people rebuild their confidence and resume a normal life, Wu Haitao, China's deputy permanent representative to the United Nations, said at a Security Council meeting.
"The return of Syrian refugees will also help ease the pressure faced by the host countries of Syrian refugees," said the CHINESE envoy.
Wu also called on international community to enhance its assistance to Syria in line with the humanitarian needs on the ground. "Relevant operations should be carried out in strict conformity with relevant council resolutions and on the basis of respect for Syrian sovereignty," he added.
According to Wu, China pays high attention to the humanitarian issue in Syria, and has provided 770 million CHINESE yuan (114.5 million U.S. dollars) of emergency humanitarian supplies and cash assistance to Syrian people, including the Syrian refugees outside the borders.
