Canada to provide 2.6-mln-USD assistance to Idai-affected southern Africa
OTTAWA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- Canada will provide 3.5 million Canadian dollars (about 2.6 million U.S. dollars) in emergency assistance to Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, three southern African countries hit by Tropical Cyclone Idai, according to Global Affairs Canada Saturday.
The cyclone, which hit the three countries since last week, has caused significant devastation to communities, destroying homes and infrastructure. Many communities remain cut off by flooding, without communications or electricity.
Across the region, nearly 600 have been killed and many more remain missing, official statistics showed.
Canada's assistance will be provided through the United Nations, Red Cross and non-governmental organization partners and will focus on meeting the immediate food, shelter, water, sanitation, health and protection needs, according to a statement of the Global Affairs Canada. Enditem
