Fiji reports nine deaths by drowning this year alone

SUVA, March 23 (Xinhua) -- There have been nine deaths by drowning in Fiji so far this Year alone.

And this week the Fiji Police recorded two cases of drowning after a one-Year-old boy and a 29-Year-old woman became Fiji's latest drowning victims.

The police said the one-Year-old victim accompanied his father to their farm and while tending to their sheep, the child allegedly wandered off where he was later found floating in a fish pond. The investigation continues into the incident.

And in the second incident, a 29-Year-old woman was last seen leaving her home to bath in the nearby river. When she failed to return home, a search was conducted where she was found lying motionless near a river in Naitasiri, one of Fiji's 14 provinces on Viti Levu, the main island of Fiji.

Health officials have confirmed that the victim is a known epileptic patient however a post mortem will still be conducted to confirm the cause of her death.

Fiji's drowning death toll currently stands at nine compared to nine for the same period last Year.
