Iran condemns Trump's remarks on Israel sovereignty over Golan Heights
TEHRAN, March 22 (Xinhua) -- Iranian Foreign Ministry on Friday condemned U.S. President Donald Trump's recent comments about the sovereignty of Israel over the occupied Golan Heights.
"The Zionist (Israel) occupying regime does not have sovereignty over any Arab or Islamic lands," The Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Bahram Qasemi said in a statement.
"Based on the the resolutions adopted by the United Nations and the UN Security Council, the Golan Heights is part of Syria which has been occupied, and its occupation should be stopped," said Qasemi.
Trump said Thursday on Twitter that "it is time for the United States to recognize Israel's sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights."
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and formally annexed the territory in 1981. But that annexation has not been recognized by the international community.
