WINDHOEK, March 21 (Xinhua) -- Namibia's president Hage Geingob on Thursday said income inequality is still a problem that hampers the developmental efforts in the country.

He was speaking at the country's 29th independence celebrations held in Windhoek.

According to Geingob, his government will continue to formulate a legal framework focused on reducing the income gap.

"We remain steadfast and resolute in the pursuit of our ultimate objectives of economic emancipation and concomitant prosperity," Geingob said.

He said that from 1994 to 2019, about 500,000 people have been lifted out of poverty.

This was achieved through the introduction of social safety nets, including old age and social grants for people living with disabilities, orphans and vulnerable children.
