Workers of municipalities protest in Lisbon for better working conditions
LISBON, March 20 (Xinhua) -- Some 1,000 local administration workers marched in downtown Lisbon on Wednesday, demanding better working conditions.
The workers shouted slogans while they marched along the streets toward the parliament building, where they will hand over to the president of the Assembly of the Republic Ferro Rodrigues a petition with their demands, which has more than 15,000 signatures.
According to the president of the union Jose Correia, the workers want to "draw attention to the degradation of the conditions of work in the local administration, especially with regard to the conditions of insalubrity, painfulness and risk."
He said that the type of activities that these workers carry out, namely health and sanitation services, expose their health in a very serious way.
"These workers have no compensation under the law for the conditions in which they carry out their activities, which is a dangerous activity with harmful effects on health," he said.
