AMMAN, March 18 (Xinhua) -- Jordan's Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi on Monday said the sole way to achieve just and lasting peace is realizing the legitimate rights of the Palestinians including their rights in statehood.

The minister made his remarks at a meeting with Secretary General of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) Saeb Erekat in Amman, where he said that the Palestinian state should be established at the borders of 1967 with East Jerusalem as its capital.

Safadi stressed the need for continued coordination between the Palestinians and the Israelis, underlining the need for continued efforts to protect the holy Islamic and Christian sites in Jerusalem.

The two sides also reviewed efforts related to preserving Bab Al-Rahma (Gate of Mercy) of the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

The minister stressed Jordan's rejection of all Israeli measures to alter the historic and legal status quo in Jerusalem, adding that Jordan does not recognize the Israeli judicial authority over East Jerusalem, as the Awqaf Jerusalem is the sole entity to run the affairs of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in line with the international law.

The two sides agreed on continued efforts and coordination to help achieve the desired lasting peace on the basis of the two-state solution and the international legitimacy resolutions. Enditem
