As the countdown has already begun for this year's much-anticipated FIFA Women's World Cup, a record crowd of 60,739 watched a Women's match between Barcelona and Atletico Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano in Madrid on Sunday. The record in-stadia audience at the Women's event has come as a big boost for the upcoming World Cup, getting underway in just three months' time in France.

The attendance is the largest ever for a top-flight club match in European Women's soccer. In fact, the hosts, Atletico, announced that the number also sets a new world record.

The club posted on their official Twitter account, "An historic record attendance for a club match! Today we have at the Wanda Metropolitano 60,739 spectators!"

"The crowd cheered up our girls and set a world record for attendance at a Women's club match," the Madrid giants added in a statement.

The record-setting game, however, saw the home team biting the dust in front of a partisan home crowd as goals from Asisat Oshoala and Toni Duggan helped the Catalan club register a 2-0 victory.

Barca now sit just three points behind Atletico at the top of the Spanish Women's soccer league – Liga Femenina.

The full house attendance surpassed the previous European record set, also in Spain, on January 30, when a crowd of 48,121 turned out to watch Athletic Bilbao take on Atletico Madrid at San Mames stadium.

However, the overall record attendance for a Women's soccer match was recorded when 90,185 spectators turned up to watch the final of the 1999 World Cup at the Rose Bowl in California when the U.S. beat China.

This year's World Cup in France will start on June 7 and Spain will be in Group B, alongside Germany, China, and South Africa.
