Namibian police calls for calm ahead of land protest
WINDHOEK, March 17 (Xinhua) -- Namibian police on Saturday released a statement calling for calm to protesters who plan to march for land on Monday in the capital, Windhoek.
The protest will be led by land lobby group Affirmative Reposition, which has been pushing for availing of land to Namibians in towns and farms.
Police spokesperson Edwin Kangutjivi called on protesters to go about their business in a peaceful manner.
"In as much as the Namibian Police have been notified and will be at hand to assist with escort, the Namibian Police force in the same vein appeal to the marching crowd to ensure that the right and freedom of other citizens are not infringed upon during the march," Kanguatjivi said.
The bulk of the protesters are expected to be youth who have grown frustrated by the unavailability of affordable land in Namibian urban areas.
