British MPs reject no-deal Brexit at any time
British MPs on Wednesday voted to reject no-DEAL Brexit at any time in the wake of Tuesday night's shattering defeat of the Brexit DEAL of British Prime Minister Theresa May.
MPs voted by 312 to 308 on an amendment in a non-binding vote, which began at 1900 GMT. The latest result is seen here as a fresh defeat for the British government.
The vote in the House of Commons kicked off ahead of deciding whether Britain will leave the European Union without a DEAL on March 29, when Brexit is due.
After rejecting a no-DEAL Brexit at any time, MPs will vote to decide whether to call for a delay to Brexit from March 29 to May 22 to give time to leave without a DEAL.
On Tuesday night, MPs voted by 391 votes to 242, a margin of 149, to reject the revised Brexit DEAL May presented to the House of Commons, bring more uncertainties to the Brexit process.
In Brussels, EU leaders demanded a "clear answer" about what Britain wants and were preparing to take a hard line if, as widely expected, the prime minister asks for a postponement of Brexit.
The EU's chief Brexit negotiator, Michel Barnier, insisted there will be no further offer from Brussels apart from the DEAL already on the table.
Earlier Wednesday, British Chancellor Philip Hammond has signaled his backing for a cross-party consensus over Brexit, though May was still appearing to support her own DEAL.
He told MPs they had "a solemn duty in the days ahead to put aside our differences and seek a compromise".
