Austrian chancellor disappointed over renewed Brexit deal collapse

VIENNA, March 13 (Xinhua) -- Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz expressed disappointment in a renewed rejection of a Brexit deal in the British parliament on Tuesday.

Kurz told the Austria Press Agency that the "renewed negative parliamentary vote brings us dangerously close to the Brexit date without having a properly prepared exit scenario ready."

Further room for negotiations in Brussels are now also "severely limited," the chancellor said.

He said a hard Brexit would be damaging for both sides, in particular Britain, and is an outcome nobody should wish for.

But Austria has made "every effort" to prepare for a no-deal scenario, he added.

Austrian Foreign Minister Karin Kneissl also weighed in on Tuesday's result, saying it was "not surprising" to her, and following yet another negative vote, indicators for a no-deal continue to remain very strong.

The United Kingdom is scheduled to leave the European Union on March 29, but its parliament has rejected the government's deal so far, raising the specter of a chaotic no-deal Brexit.

Another parliament vote on Wednesday will decide on whether to block a no-deal Brexit at the end of this month, without ruling out a no-deal Brexit later in the year, and the parliament will vote Thursday on extending the Article 50 divorce process, likely until the end of June, which will delay Brexit.
