Regional organization can shift dynamics to peace, security: Indonesian envoy
UNITED NATIONS, March 12 (Xinhua) -- Indonesia believes Regional organization can fundamentally shift the dynamics of the region towards peace and security, a senior diplomat of Indonesia said here on Tuesday.
Regional organization can build bridges of understanding, transform relation from enmity to amity and bring stability and prosperity where conflict and discord previously reigned, Muhsin Syihab, Deputy Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, said during a Security Council briefing on cooperation between the UN and Regional or sub-Regional organization.
As a founding member of ASEAN (the Association of Southeast Asian Nations), Indonesia is a consistent and robust supporter of Regional organizations, the Indonesian diplomat said.
"However, we have to bear in mind that Regional or sub-Regional organization must adapt to new challenges, in order to remain relevant to the pursuit of international peace and security," he said.
The cooperation between the UN and Regional organization is also important, he said, as the challenges of the 21st century are numerous and complex.
There are no easy solutions to some of those challenges, he said.
Indonesia strongly believes that to address the collective challenges, he said, greater emphasis must be placed upon multilateralism.
