JERUSALEM, March 11 (Xinhua) -- A firebomb was thrown outside a flashpoint holy Site in East Jerusalem on Tuesday, triggering violence in the place.

A Police statement said the firebomb was hurled at a Police post located just outside the Al-Aqsa mosque compound, a Site worshipped by Muslims as the "Noble Sanctuary" and revered by Jews as the "Temple Mount."

Damage was caused to the post and a Police officer suffered breathing difficulties following the smoke, according to the statement.

The Police said three suspects were detained for questioning.

Following the incident, the Police closed down all of the gates of the hilltop compound and evacuated people who were already inside.

The move triggered clashes between Muslim worshippers and the Police.
