The next great debate will be about the role of tech in society and government
Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Index.html" target="_blank">Industrial Revolution dramatically re-ordered Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The sociology of politics. Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The US, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Populist Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">party Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The United States was founded as a force Index.html" target="_blank">In opposition to capitalism, wary of modernity. Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The UK, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The profound economic changes reshaped policy: from Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Factory and Workers Act through to Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The liberal reforms of David Lloyd George, which ultimately laid Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The ground for Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The welfare state, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The consequences were felt for Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The whole of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The next century.
Today, anoIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther far-reachIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing revolution is underway, which is causIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing similar ripple effects. Populists of both left and right have risen Index.html" target="_blank">In promIndex.html" target="_blank">Inence and are more successful than Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their American forebearers at Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The turn of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The 19th century, but similarly rejectIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing of modernisation. And Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their search for scapegoats to sustaIndex.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their success, tech is now firmly Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their firIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing lIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine.
Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The risk is that it sets back progress Index.html" target="_blank">In an area that is yet to truly transform public policy. Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The UK at least, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The government machIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine looks little different from how it did when Lloyd George announced Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The People’s Budget Index.html" target="_blank">In 1909.
Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The first politicians who master this tech revolution and shape it for Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The public goodwill determIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine what Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The next century will look like. Rapid developments Index.html" target="_blank">In technologies such as gene-editIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing and Artificial Index.html" target="_blank">Intelligence, as well as Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The quest for potential ground-breakIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing leaps forward Index.html" target="_blank">In nuclear fission and quantum computIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, will provoke significant changes to our economies, societies and politics.
Yet, today, very few are even askIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The right questions, let alone providIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing answers. This is why I’m focusIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing on technology as Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The biggest sIndex.html" target="_blank">Ingle topic that policymakers need to engage with. Through Index.html" target="_blank">Institute.global/">my Index.html" target="_blank">Institute, I’m hopIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing to help curate Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The best thIndex.html" target="_blank">InkIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing on Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">These critical issues and devise politically actionable policy and strategy to deal with Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Them. This will help put tech, Index.html" target="_blank">Innovation and Index.html" target="_blank">Investment Index.html" target="_blank">In research and development at Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The forefront of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The progressive programme. And we do so Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The belief that tech is – and will contIndex.html" target="_blank">Inue to be – a generally positive force for society.
This is not to ignore Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The problems that surfaced as a result of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">These changes, because Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">There are genuIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine issues around privacy and public Index.html" target="_blank">Interest.

NEW YORK, NY – APRIL 23: Monitors show imagery from security cameras seen at Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Lower Manhattan Security Index.html" target="_blank">Initiative on April 23, 2013 Index.html" target="_blank">In New York City. Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The shifts that have and will occur Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The labour market as a result of automation will require far more thIndex.html" target="_blank">InkIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing about governments’ role, as those who are likely to bear Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The brunt of it are those already feelIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing left behIndex.html" target="_blank">Ind. Re-traIndex.html" target="_blank">InIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing alone will not suffice, and lifelong Index.html" target="_blank">Investment Index.html" target="_blank">In skills may be required. So too does a Universal Basic Index.html" target="_blank">Income feel Index.html" target="_blank">Insufficient and a last resort, raIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther than an active, well-targeted policy solution.
“Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The first politicians who master this tech revolution and shape it for Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The public goodwill determIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine what Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The next century will look like.”
But pessimism is a poor guide to Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The future. It ends Index.html" target="_blank">In conservativism Index.html" target="_blank">In one form or anoIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther, wheIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther that is simple statism, protectionism or nationalism. And so Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The challenge for those us of who believe Index.html" target="_blank">In this agenda of harnessIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The opportunities, while mitigatIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing its risks is to put this Index.html" target="_blank">In a way that connects with people’s lives. This should be a New Deal or People’s Budget type moment; a seismic change Index.html" target="_blank">In public policy as we pivot to Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The future.
At Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The highest level this is about Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The role of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The state Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The 21st century, which needs to move away from ideological debates over size and spend and towards how it is re-ordered to meet Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The demands of people today. Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The US, President Obama made some big strides with Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The role of Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Chief Technology Officer, but it will require a whole rethIndex.html" target="_blank">InkIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing of government’s modus operandi, so that it is able to keep up with Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The pace of change around it.

Across all Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The key policy areas we should be askIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing: how can tech be used to enable people to live Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their lives as Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">They choose, Index.html" target="_blank">Increase Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their quality of life and deliver more opportunities to flourish and succeed?
For example, Index.html" target="_blank">In education it will Index.html" target="_blank">Include lookIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing at new models of teachIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing. OnlIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine courses have raised Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The possibility of changIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The busIndex.html" target="_blank">Iness of learnIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, while AI may be able to change Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The nature of teachIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, providIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing more personalised platforms and free teachers to spend Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their time more effectively. It could also Index.html" target="_blank">Include new models of fundIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, such as Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Lambda School, which present excitIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing possibilities for Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The future.
Similarly with health, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The use of technology Index.html" target="_blank">In diagnostics is well-documented. But it can be transformative Index.html" target="_blank">In how we deploy our resources, wheIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther that is freeIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing up more front-lIndex.html" target="_blank">Ine staff to give Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Them more time with patients, or even Index.html" target="_blank">In how Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The whole model currently works. As it stands a huge amount of costs go on Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The last days of life and on Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The elderly. But far more focus should go on prevention and monitorIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, so that people can lead longer lives, have less anxiety about ill health and lower Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The risks of illnesses becomIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing far more serious than Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">They need to be. Technology, which can often feel so Index.html" target="_blank">Intangible, can be revolutionary Index.html" target="_blank">In this regard.
Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Infrastructure and transport too, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">There are potentially huge benefits. WheIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther this is new and more efficient forms of transport or how we design our public space so that it works better for citizens. This will necessitate large projects to better connect communities, but also focus on small and simple solutions to everyday concerns that people have about Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Their day to day lives, such as usIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing sensors to collect data and improve services improve every day standard of livIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing. Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The Boston Major’s office has been at Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The frontier of such thIndex.html" target="_blank">InkIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing, and more thought must go Index.html" target="_blank">Into how we use data to improve tax, welfare, energy and Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The public good.
AchievIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing this will better align government with Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The pace of change that has been happenIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing Index.html" target="_blank">In society. As it stands, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The two are out of sync and unless government catches up, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The belief and trust Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Institutions to be seen to workIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing for people will contIndex.html" target="_blank">Inue to fall. Populism thrives Index.html" target="_blank">In this space. But Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The responsibility is not solely on politicians. It is not enough for those Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The tech world to say Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">They don’t get it.
Those workIndex.html" target="_blank">Ing Index.html" target="_blank">In Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The sector must help Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Them to understand and support policy development, raIndex.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">Ther than allow misunderstandIndex.html" target="_blank">Ings and mistrust to compound. Because Index.html" target="_blank">In little more than two decades, Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The digital revolution has dramatically altered Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The shape of our economies Index.html" target="_blank">In society. This can contIndex.html" target="_blank">Inue, but only if companies work alongside governments to truly deliver Index.html" target="_blank">Index.html" target="_blank">The change that so many slogans aspire to.
