Miao people in Guizhou celebrate Zouqin

On the second day of the second month by the lunar calendar, China's ethnic Miao people celebrate the Zouqin festival. "Zouqin" means "gathering of family and friends," and the occasion is marked by sporting events and artistic activities.

A particular favoritethis year was a singing contest in which 18 groups performed a selection of traditional Miao songs.

"They're very distinctive, especially their costumes. Their silver jewelry and clothes are very beautiful," said one tourist.

"It's the first time we are attending Zouqin festival. I think it's magnificent. It's a platform for deepening the friendship among different ethnic groups. The atmosphere is very good, " added another tourist.

An embroidery show and various sporting events attracted large numbers of participants. But the highlight for many spectatorswas a demonstration of Miao marriage customs. Nine couples, dressed in traditional costumes, went through a wedding ceremony. The elders who hosted itsang ancient Miao songs to pass on best wishes to the newly married couples.

The Zouqin festival is part of the intangible cultural heritage of Guizhou province. In recent years, it has become a distinctive event attracting large numbers of visitors.
