Female Chinese snowboarder Qiu Leng wins silver at Winter Universiade
Japan's Imai Kurumi won gold in the women's snowboarding halfpipe event at the 2019 Winter Universiade in Russia on Friday. Chinese Qiu Leng and Wu Shaotong took the silver and bronze.
Out of the 10-strong field in the event, six advanced to the final. Qiu was in third place after qualifying and she did well in her first run in the final. The 21-year-old sat second with 73.75 points.
Kurumi had her best run of the final in her first attempt. The Japanese impressed the judges with the height and difficulty of her maneuvers and went on to receive a score of 89.25 points to win gold. China's Wu had the third best run with a score of 70.50 points and finished third. During the second attempt, Qiu scored 83.50 for the silver medal.
China's Zhao Ziquan finishes ninth in ladies' short program
On the ice, 35 figure skaters competed in the ladies' short program, but only the top 24 moved on to the free skate. China's Zhao Ziquan was participating in her third Winter Universiade.
Zhao twisted her ankle in November but had since recovered and turned in a good performance. The 21-year-old ranked ninth with 54.17 points, while Japanese skater Mai Mihara was first with 75.92 points. Stanislava Konstantinova of Russia sat second.
Russia's Popova and Mozgov win ice dance

In the free dance portion of the Ice Dance, Chinese duo Guo Yuzhu and Zhao Pengkun earned 81.21 points. Combined with their rhythm dance performance, they scored a total of 132.66 to take eleventh place. Russia's Betina Popova and Sergei Mozgov won the gold medals.
