Ex-police officer convicted in fatal shooting of black motorist in U.S. Florida
WASHINGTON, March 7 (Xinhua) -- A former police officer was convicted Thursday of manslaughter and attempted murder in the fatal shooting of a stranded black motorist in southeastern U.S. state of Florida in 2015.
Nouman Raja, aged 41, now faces life sentence for killing Corey Jones when the 31-year-old musician was waiting for help for his broken down SUV on the side of a South Florida highway.
Prosecutors said an audio recording of the shooting indicated that Raja, who was on duty but in plainclothes and drove an unmarked white van at the time, had never identified himself, according to local media reports.
The last time a Florida officer faced trial for an on-duty killing was in 1989, said the reports.
