Chinese company Sinohydro will build four sewage treatment plants and upgrade other existing ones for Harare City Council under a 237 million U.S. dollar partnership agreed by the two parties.

Sinohydro chief representative in Zimbabwe Wu Yifeng told Xinhua Tuesday that works will include buildingnew sewage treatment plants and upgrading and rehabilitation of others and installation of supporting pipework.

The project would increase wastewater treatment capacity and quality, reduce sewage spillages and chokes, and reduce environmental pollution and outbreaks of diseases, Wu said.

Wu also said both parties will push the projects to start as soon as possible.

Harare has five sewerage treatment plants with a treatment capacity of 219.5 megaliters per day but is receiving in excess of 250 megaliters, indicating a serious capacity deficiency.

The city council has already acceded to the proposal for the rehabilitation and Sinohydro is carrying out feasibility studies before submitting a bill of quantities.

Environmental Management Committee told media that a technical team of engineers has been set up to consider the submitted documents and interrogate them in consultation with Sinohydro.
